When I originally built the first prototype of the BulletTrain eXpress Keyboard Platform back in 2010 that reconfigured the Bluetooth Apple Wireless Keyboard and Magic Trackpad into a keyboard tray or platform, my goal was not to make the best looking desktop keyboard, or to free up more than 50% or your precious desktop real estate.
My goal was to create the most ergonomic and comfortable keyboard. Having previously suffered from Repetitive Stress Injury (RSI), I was on a mission to figure out how to stop RSI, as well as Carpel Tunnel Syndrome. Ironically, I developed RSI by using a Microsoft "Natural" ergonomic wave keyboard along with a Kensington trackball.
Over the years I have spoken with many, many customers who have told me that by using the BulletTrain eXpress Keyboard Platform, it not only reversed their RSI, but cured it–permanently. I should know, because I am one of them. It is hard to believe something so simple works so well, and it does.
Whenever I speak with a customer on the phone, I ask them two questions. First I ask them what Mac they are using their eXpress with, and I ask them how they found out about the BulletTrain eXpress Keyboard Platform? Customers most typically answer the later question by saying something like, "I bought an Apple wireless keyboard and trackpad, and the trackpad was way too difficult to use, and felt awkward having it located next to my keyboard. I did an internet search and looked at all the different solutions, and ended up concluding that the BulletTrain eXpress Keyboard Platform was by far and away the best, and I couldn't fine anything else that even came close."
Real Customer Care
Printed on the inside of every BulletTrain eXpress Keyboard Platform box it says "We Really, Really, Really Care." This is absolutely true. There is nothing more rewarding as a designer than knowing I significantly helped improve the quality of a person's life, particularly when it comes to how they use or benefit from using a computer. I believe that computing devices, coupled with the internet, and world-class search engines are the key to unlocking mankind's full intellectual potential. As a designer, I not only want to make certain that nobody is left behind, but that every person is able to optimize their computing experience. I coined the term "friction-free computing" many years ago, and this phrase is my guiding light with BulletTrain design.
Over the years I have spoken with many of my customers who suffered from all kinds of physical handicaps they were able to overcome with the BulletTrain eXpress Keyboard Platform! This includes not only people who suffer from Repetitive Stress Injury (RSI), and Carpel Tunnel Syndrome (CTS), but also people who suffer from severe Motor Neuron Disease (MND), as well as Tendonitis and Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA). I have also spoken with customers who are paraplegic and are confined to a wheelchair who have personally thanked me for bringing the BulletTrain eXpress Keyboard Platform to life, and sharing with me how profound of a positive effect the eXpress had on their ability to use their computer.
Ergonomic Issues
How serious are the ergonomic issues? Very Serious! I strongly believe keyboard and mice usage will become the new cigarettes of the 21st century. In other words, as the computer generation advances, and more people develop cumulative trauma disorders, the world will look back and point the finger at old-fashioned keyboard and mice.
I believe there is a still tremendous room for improvement on the keyboard and pointing device front. If you examine an original Mac from 1984 to a 2012 iMac, they could not be more night and day. One has a tiny black and white screen and the other has a super high-resolution screed with super-vivid colors. Same thing with every other computer attribute including RAM and storage capacity, as well as CPU speed. But the keyboard and mouse is almost identical. The only real difference is that they went cordless. This is ironic because the keyboard and pointing device are probably the most important part of the computing experience, because this is the primary mechanism by which we interact with the computer. At BulletTrain, in the upcoming years, we intend to continue to revolutionize the keyboard and pointing devices in deeply profound and meaningful ways.
A Superb Solution
Last week I was talking to a customer and he mentioned he had an elderly friend named Kay who was 82 years old and really smart and sharp, but suffered from severe rheumatoid arthritis in her hands. He mentioned he took her to the Apple store and helped her purchase and iPad. Kay brought the iPad home and tired desperately to use it, but in the end she had no choice to return it, because her sever arthritis stopped her from being able to use the touch interface effectively.
Kay's and her friend were able to setup a Mac Mini with a big screen so she could sit in front of it in her favorite recliner. Using a mouse was obviously not an option, so Kay tried to use her Apple Wireless Bluetooth Keyboard and Magic Trackpad by balancing them on her lap, but it was impossible to use, and she could not click on her trackpad because it kept falling off her lap onto the floor, so Kay did what many of our customers do out of desperation and necessity–they attempt to build their own BulletTrain eXpress Keyboard Platform. The photo below shows Kay with her "DIY" Do it yourself BulletTrain eXpress Keyboard Platform, which consists of a her Apple keyboard and trackpad being balanced on top of a coffee table book.
Kay's self-made solution allowed her to overcome her challenge and finally be able to use her mac. The only challenge is she had the keyboard hanging off the edge of the spine of the book, and the trackpad still moved around, not to mention the added weight of the book.
When Kay's freind saw her self-made solution, he decided that somebody had to have addressed this same issue. I spoke with him on the phone and he told me he did an internet search and had looked at every other solution, which would not work, so he called me on the phone to discuss if the BulletTrain eXpress Keyboard Platform might allow Kay to completely overcome her solution.
First he asked if Kay got a BulletTrain eXpress Keyboard Platform, would she be able to press down on the trackpad and receive the positive tactile-feedback click to which I positively answered, yes. His second question was, would it be comfortable on her lap? I mentioned the BulletTrain eXpress Keyboard Platform is extremely light-weight at just over a pound, yet very strong and stable. I also mentioned I designed the bottom chassis to ergonomically fit perfectly in your lap.
The photo above shows Kay with her dog sitting next to her, with her BulletTrain eXpress Keyboard Platform on her lap, which allows her to completely participate in the digital age–which most people take for granted. Since Kay has sever arthritis, the BulletTrain eXpress Keyboard Platform gives her an ergonomic wrist and palm rest so she can navigate the screen with her trackpad and type comfortably. Apple claims to go out of their way to create solutions for handicapped people, which they refer to as "Accessibility" features.
I know Apple is well intentioned and does much great work, but there is much, much room for improvement in this area. I am calling on Apple to please open up the API on the iPad, iPhone & iPod Touch so it can be used and controlled with the Magic Trackpad. Doing so would allow many, many handicapped people to be able to much more effectively use their iPads.
I am also calling on Apple to do the same by opening up the API on the Apple TV to be able to use the Bluetooth Apple Wireless Keyboard and Trackpad as well. Doing so will open up a whole new world of possibilities for everyone. For example, Kay could simply plug in an iPad or iPad Mini via HDMI to her flat screen TV and use the BulletTrain eXpress Keyboard Platform to do everything should she can't do on an iPad because of her arthritis, not to mentioned, it would be much easier for her to see everything on her large flat TV screen than on a tiny iPad screen. Everything would be better including her ability to watch movies on the big screen.
Also, by using her Apple Magic Trackpad to navigate her iPad she could not get fingertip oils rubbed all over her iPad screen, which she would have to constantly clean off. Apple, it is time to make the "Magic" Trackpad live up to its name and full potential!!!

I was speaking with a BulletTrain customer yesterday and her name is Regina. Regina suffers from arthritis and told me she desperately needed a BulletTrain Express Keyboard Platform. I asked her to tell me more, and she told me that she could not wait to get a BulletTrain Express Keyboard Platform, since she was currently using here Apple trackpad box and another Apple box to simulate having a BulletTrain Express Keyboard Platform. I asked here to take a photo and send it in so I could see what she was talking about, and here it is. Fascinating captain!!!
I mentioned to Regina that she was not the first customer I know of who tried to roll her own BulletTrain eXpress Keyboard Platform, I mentioned the Do It Yourself Keyboard Platform made from a Cookbook.

With the BulletTrain eXpress we typically refer to it as the Ultimate Desktop, Laptop and Home Theater Keyboard and in this instance you see a real customer using it as the Ultimate Laptop keyboard, since he has elevated his laptop up to his eye height, and he just sent in this photo with the following email:

Thanks for designing a truly magnificent travel companion, the BulletTrain Express. Though it added a little heft to my backpack, it was well worth it to bring this invaluable ergonomic helper with me to Bali where I wrote the concluding chapter for my forthcoming book.
As you can see from the photos, I set it up so that the Express would be at an appropriate wrist/arm length, and I elevated my MacBook Pro on a box so that it would be at eye level. The view is from my balcony -- I lived in an amazing two-story villa near Ubud just across from the botanic gardens, overlooking rice paddies.
BTW, I learned about Steve's passing while in Bali, and it was a simultaneously sad and inspirational moment. Say what you want about his many personality flaws, the man truly changed the world and died complete having given his gifts. Watching the Think Different video and his Stanford commencement speech, I realize that he entered the pantheon of the Crazy Ones.

The Missing Piece of the Convergence Puzzle Has Finally Been Delivered

We live in a fascinating time in history, where many traditional ways of doing things are quickly becoming obsolete. Worlds are colliding and converging very quickly. We see this with smart phones you can watch TV and movies on, read a book, play games, search the web or keep up with friends on Facebook and Twitter.
When one technology overcomes and supplants another, it is referred to as an inflection point. Trains replaced a horse and buggy or stagecoach, and airplanes replaced trains.
First we replaced paper encyclopedias and dictionaries with CD and DVD-Roms, and now we have replaced them with crowd-sourced versions like Wikipedia and the Urban Dictionary. iPads are quickly replacing and supplanting newspapers and magazines.
Convergence Defined
A quarter-century ago, the high-tech world began contemplating the notion of convergence. A decade and a half-ago, in the mid 1990s, one of the hottest topics in tech was “Convergence” also known as "Interactive Television" or, "Interactive TV."
Actually, the very first truly Interactive TV was invented in 1968 by Ralph Bear, when he invented the game Pong, which was played on a TV. Here is a video from 1969 of Ralph Bear and Bill Harrison playing Ping-Pong on TV, which was the very first Video Game in history:
Everybody was taking about convergence, and the great question, was whether or not we would end-up watching TV on our computers, or Computing on our TVs? That question was answered, and today we watch TV, movies and experience all sorts of “Multimedia” on our computers.
The best example of this would be things like watching You Tube, Hulu or Netflix, and mainstream TV programming on your computer screen. The challenge is that TVs and Computers converged into Computers, but the way we control this experience has not.
Ironically, it was Bill Gates that was one of the early proponents of convergence, and he perhaps better articulated the idea of convergence in a 1999 Forbes magazine story when he said:
"Amazingly, it's been more than 20 years since the concept of 'convergence' entered the high-tech lexicon. For most of that time, convergence has meant two things: the coming together of the computer, consumer electronics, and telecommunications industries and the merging of gadgets such as the PC, TV and telephone.
But as the 21st century approaches, sophisticated digital technologies and the promise of exploding bandwidth are combining to create a third kind of convergence that will change our lives more dramatically than anything we've seen so far. It will deliver the power of the information age into the hands of everyone, anytime, anywhere.
...A lot still needs to be done to make this a reality. First, in the same way that people must speak the same language if they are to understand each other and collaborate, smart devices also need to speak a common language to communicate effectively."
Six years later, in 2004, Bill Gates said:
"Convergence doesn't happen until you have everything in a digital form the consumer can easily use on all the different devices...There's one thing missing: You have to sit down at the keyboard to work with it. You need a remote control interface at a distance, and you need to be able to project on to different screens."
The Promise Of Convergence
The promise of convergence is immense, and science-fiction movies like The Minority Report have given us a glimpse of what it might look like. The great question is how realistic are user-interfaces like the one Tom Cruise uses in Minority Report?
I argue that it is not realistic in the same way and that reality is and will continue to be even better and more realistic than science fiction. If there is any question in your mind, compare the devices on the original Star Trek with a modern iPhone. Reality it turns out is more innovative than fiction. So let's separate the fact from the fiction by looking at the real world options.
Option 1: Set Top Box
Many set-top boxes like a Tivo, DVR, Google TV and Apple TV, have tried and failed to deliver on the promise of convergence. The world has gotten 80% of the way across the river with convergence, but nobody has ever figured out the last 20%. Using an infrared remote control to type text, which uses a 5-way rocker-switch to type has to be one of the most archaic, inaccurate and frustrating experiences.
You know what I am talking about! Remember misspelling something, then having to toggle up to the delete key to erase characters, then you over shoot the mark!?! Trying to type or search on a set top box with a hand-held remote control is like trying to nail jello to the wall. Tivo came up with an even better remote with a built-in sliding keyboard, but who wants to type an email with a tiny/awkward keyboard.
Even Google and Logitech failed by partnering on the Logitech Revue set-top-box (as seen above) that ran Google TV. As a matter of fact, Logitech lost more than $100 Million and the CEO had to step-down because Logitech had more returns that actual sales. It doesn't take much to realize how bizarro unergonomic the Logitech Revue Google TV is with the trackpad located in the upper right hand corner.
Option 2: Mac Mini or HTPC
Computer On A TV
Mac Mini Media Centers and PC Home Theaters (HTPCs) are beginning to become very popular. Essentially, a Home Theater PC or Mac Mini Media Center is a very small computer that bypasses a set-top boxes and hooks up a very small dedicated media computer to a large flat screen LCD TV.
Home media centers typically benefit from having a full-size wireless keyboard and mouse. The idea is you can sit on a couch or in your favorite chair, by yourself, or with friends and family, and not only watch TV, but surf the web and do most of the things you do on a laptop computer. This includes enjoying video content on YouTube, Hulu, Netflix or iTunes.
You have probably noticed over the past several years, you are watching more and more TV programming on ABC.com, NBC.com, and CBS.com as well as Fox.com and even on HBO.com. If you are reading this article, you probably are watching more and more YouTube videos and snippets. In an increasingly "on-demand-world" this trend will not only continue, but at some point probably replace cable TV as we know it.
The tremendous challenge today, is with a wireless keyboard and mouse, you are 80% of the way to achieving convergence nirvana. The bottleneck is the keyboard and mouse are extremely difficult to use from a coffee table, and even more difficult to use on your lap or on a couch, recliner of big-comfy chair.
Even if you have a wireless Apple keyboard and Magic Trackpad, it’s still very difficult to use on your coffee table or lap. If you try to use it on a coffee table it places you in a very uncomfortable position where you have to lean forward every time you want to use it. On your lap, the trackpad often ends up falling off your lap or between the cushions, or even worse, on the floor.
If two or more people are are sitting in a family room, living room or den, and they want to take turns controlling the Mac Mini Media Center or HTPC, forget about it. You can't comfortably pass a keyboard and mouse or trackpad to somebody.
Option 3: Stay On The Desktop
The BulletTrain eXpress is extremely popular as a desktop keyboard and mouse replacement. Many eXpress users are used to using a MacBook or PC Laptop with a trackpad, and when they move to the desktop they get really frustrated with a conventional keyboard and mouse.
With the advent of OS X Lion, MacBook users are becoming accustomed to the extreme efficiency of using gestures, which makes moving back and forth between a MacBook and a standard desktop frustrating. Many people who even use an Apple wireless keyboard and Magic Trackpad report that it feels awkward. They say moving their hand back and forth between a mouse or trackpad is uncomfortable and stressful.

Steve Jobs' Integrated TV
I originally published the above story on October 3, 2011. Steve Jobs died two days later on October 5, 2011. A few weeks later, it came out that Steve Jobs biographer, Walter Isaacson, quote Steve Jobs in his new book as saying:
"I'd like to create an integrated television set that is completely easy to use. It would be seamlessly synced with all of your devices and with iCloud. It will have the simplest user interface you could imagine. I finally cracked it."
I am obviously fascinated to see and explore Steve Jobs' vision for the Integrated TV. My best guess is that Apple will update the $99 Apple TV with the A5 chip found in the 4S iPhone, and iPad 2. This would allow you to speak to your Apple TV through your iPhone or iPod Touch using Siri voice commands. Apple may also introduce and actual TV set like a 50, 60 or 70 inch TV, with Apple TV functionality built into it, which would be cool.
It also crosses my mind Steve Jobs may have been referring to iOS 5's Airplay Mirroring on the iPhone or iPad?
In my opinion, no matter how great the above mentioned Steve Jobs potential solutions may or may not be, it will not be nearly as good as having a Mac Mini hooked up to a 60LCD TV, with a BulletTrain eXpress Keyboard Platform to control it.
I say this because this solution gives the user a completely integrated TV experience that is identical to that of a MacBook. With my idea of the ultimate interactive TV it provides the user with ZERO additional learning curve, by offering a complete consistent experience.
Time as they say will tell, and it will be very interesting to see what happens.

Robert Mohn took this photo of his Mac Mini Media Center setup which looks Pretty Good!!! Pretty Gooood!!!! It is amazing to me to see how the BulletTrain Express really MAKES a HTPC the way it should be!!!! The BulletTrain Express Keyboard/Trackpad Tray for Apple is really one of those things you look at and think "Why didn't I think of that!?!?" Ironically, I still think about that, even though I did think of it ;-)

Making Computer Gaming Into Video Gaming!

When it comes to gaming I have found that I could never have my cake and eat it too. Fallout New Vegas is a great example. I love playing it on my PS3, because I get to enjoy it on my 60-inch from the comfort of my couch, but the game uses up so much of my memory and processing speed that it regularly glitches and freezes.
There is also the issue of loading times video games are so well known for. When I play it on my computer, I get seamless gameplay, but I have to sit at a desk in front of a small screen.
Many people have been looking for a solution like the Bullet Train Express for converging their computer with their entertainment center for a long time.
Since the first BulletTrain Express Keyboard Platforms reached our customers, they have been sending us love letters and rave reviews about how it's changed their lives. The Express has unchained them from their desks and they can now work from their couches, their beds, or wherever they feel comfortable. Everyone is enjoying the new freedom offered by the Express in their work, but could it offer the same experience in their play as well?
Gamers out there would never think to use a trackpad instead of a mouse, but that may be because before there never was one with 26.5 square inches of trackpad real estate. With Fallout New Vegas loaded my computer, hooked up to my 60-inch I decided to experiment with my Bullet Train Express.
After a few changes to which key does what, I have to say the Express made for the best gaming controller I have ever used (and I am not just saying that because I sell them). Using the directional keys to move and the trackpad to look around and turn made for much better and more precise control.
If you play a lot of RPG and first-person shooter games like Fallout New Vegas you will love this feature. I was able to use all my fingers, which I could not do with a controller or keyboard and mouse configuration. A few hours into it I got used to the key configuration and I was flying it like never before.
Thanks to the Bullet Train Express gamers can now benefit from all the games on your computer without the drawbacks. You can have your epic computer games and play them too. The only issue you will have is the Bullet Train Express will make you even more addicted to your games than you already are!

BulletTrain Express Inspires Customer To Invest another $4000 in Mac Setup
One of our customers's purchased a BulletTrain Express Keyboard Platform and a few days after it was delivered, he wrote in and said they liked it so much he was buying a second one. I was naturally curious, so I called the customer on the phone and he said:
You will never believe where I am!?! I am at Costco right now, purchasing two new 55 LCD TVs!!! Before I had a 37inch LCD TV in my living room with a Mac Mini hooked up to it and all I could do was watch Hulu and Netflix, because the Apple Wireless Keyboard and Magic Trackpad were so difficult to use. Then when I put them in the BulletTrain Express they got magically transformed and all of a sudden, I could do EVERYTHING I could do with my Macbook and Desktop Macs, except I could do it very comfortably from the couch.
So I am at Costco buying a 55 inch LCD TV to replace the 37 inch in my living room, and I am so impressed with the BulletTrain Express, I ordered a second one that I am buying another 55 inch LCD TV to use in my bedroom from bed.
The point that is so profound in my mind with our customer, is that our simple BulletTrain Express Keyboard Platform is an accessory, that got him to purchase 2 55inch LCD TVs and another Mac Mini, and another Apple Wireless Keyboard and Magic Trackpad. That is pretty profound when you think about it.
Then our same customer wrote this about the BulletTrain Express:
I actually have a (BulletTrain Express) keyboard/trackpad platform thingy and it is so effin sick for my mac mini set up from the living room couch. i ended up ordering a second one for my bedroom mini LCD set up too. Get one, use it, and try to live without it after a few hours of using it. So helpful, convenient. The keyboard trackpad is always exactly where they should be...never falling off the couch/bed. When my neck or back gets sore from sitting to much...voila...lay down on the couch and voila...ergo couch-o lcd-o...
